Finding Your Way Back to Yourself: Exploring the Connection Between Mind, Body and Emotions.

Life can become busy very quickly. Work, family, responsibilities and the constant demands of everyday life can leave little time to pause and notice how we are actually feeling.
Yet our minds, bodies and emotions are closely connected. When life becomes stressful or overwhelming, we may notice changes in our body, our mood, our energy or even the way we relate to the people around us. Sometimes, finding our way back to ourselves begins with something quite simple: slowing down and listening. Listening to Your Body Our bodies are constantly communicating with us.
Tension in the shoulders, a tight jaw, an unsettled stomach, tiredness or difficulty relaxing can all be signs that we may need to stop and pay attention. This doesn't necessarily mean that something is wrong. Rather, it can be an opportunity to become more aware of what we are experiencing and what we might need.
Different people find different ways of reconnecting with themselves. For some, this may be through quiet time, meditation or gentle movement. For others, hands-on therapies or creative practices can provide a space to slow down and listen.
Two approaches that can support this mind-body connection are Craniosacral Therapy and Chakradance™. Craniosacral Therapy: A Gentle Approach Craniosacral Therapy (CST) is a gentle, hands-on therapy that works with the tissues and fluid surrounding the brain and spinal cord. Using light touch, a practitioner works with the body's natural rhythms and responses. While deep relaxation is often experienced during a CST session, the work can be about much more than simply relaxing.
People seek Craniosacral Therapy for many different reasons, including physical tension and discomfort, neck and back pain, headaches and migraines, injuries, digestive difficulties, stress and other ongoing health concerns. Every person and every session is different. CST provides an opportunity to slow down, become more aware of the body and give yourself time and space to respond to what you are experiencing. The practitioner's approach matters too.
While Craniosacral Therapy has specific principles and techniques, every practitioner also brings their own experience, awareness and way of working to a session. Liz Plant of Grace & Ease, who offers Craniosacral Therapy in the wider Canterbury and Otago regions, incorporates her natural intuition into her approach. Liz describes herself as being particularly sensitive to what her clients may be experiencing during a session. She may physically sense areas of discomfort, tension or emotional overwhelm in her own body, which can give her additional insight into what a client may be experiencing.
Importantly, Liz does not diagnose. Instead, she works with what the client's body tells her, allowing each session to unfold naturally and responding to what she notices along the way. Her intuitive awareness works alongside her Craniosacral Therapy training rather than replacing it. Each session is individual, with the intention of creating a safe and supportive space where the client can slow down, listen to their body and receive the care that feels appropriate for them.

Another way of exploring the mind-body connection is through movement.
Chakradance™ combines meditation, free movement, music and mandala art to provide an opportunity to explore different aspects of ourselves through the body's natural language of movement. Rather than needing to know how to dance, participants are encouraged to move in a way that feels natural to them. There is no right or wrong way to move and no previous dance experience is required.
Chakradance works with the seven chakra system, with different workshops focusing on individual chakras and the themes associated with them. Movement can sometimes provide a way of expressing things that are difficult to put into words. An emotion, memory, sensation or insight may arise through the experience, while the creative process of making a mandala provides another opportunity for reflection. For some people, simply having permission to slow down, move and notice what is happening within them can be valuable. Different Approaches, One Common Goal Craniosacral Therapy and Chakradance are very different experiences.
CST is a hands-on therapy where the person receiving the session can relax and allow the practitioner to work with them. Chakradance is participatory. The person takes an active role through meditation, movement, creativity and reflection. Yet both approaches can encourage greater awareness of the connection between the body, emotions and mind. Neither requires you to have everything figured out before you begin. Sometimes the first step is simply creating enough space to notice what is happening within you.
Making Time for Yourself In a busy world, making time for yourself can easily move to the bottom of the list. But taking time to pause doesn't have to mean making major changes to your life. It might be as simple as taking a few quiet moments each day, going for a walk, moving your body, sitting somewhere peaceful or finding a practice that helps you reconnect with yourself. Learning to listen to your body is a process. There may be days when you feel connected and clear, and other days when you feel tired, distracted or overwhelmed. The important thing is to begin where you are.

Sometimes finding your way back to yourself doesn't require you to become someone different. It simply begins with taking the time to listen.
